Standing in the watt at the national park in Schillig Germany, March 3rd, 2009. My husband John and I were in Schillig and Wilhelmshaven, working on a project together with students, artists and scientists from the ICBM in Wilhelmshaven. We were invited to participate in the Das Wattenmeer Project, a transdiciplinary project of art, [...] I’m presenting my work at Columbia College Chicago on 03/19 as part of The Interactive Arts and Media Lecture Series. The B/W image is a very recent one I made in collaboration with graduate student, R. Kirk Pirlo, here at Clemson. We have been trying to use a microstamping technique to write text with neurons (PDMS stamp, PDL and neurons harvested from chick embryos). As you can see our early attempts have not yielded readable [...] This is an interesting example of scientists employing a process called patterning, used to structure the growth patterns of living cells in vitro. Patterning processes can include simple printed 2D films of proteins or other substances or 3D structures like the one below.
